Media Advisory: UN Reviews Canada on Friday

Friday is the big day.  The United Nations Human Rights Council will review Canada’s human rights record as part of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process.  All member-states will have their turn, but on Friday it is ours.

In preparation for the UPR, CWP is taking part in a press conference on the Hill this morning with Amnesty International Canada, and the Social Rights Advocacy Centre.  Details are in the media advisory below:

Canada’s human rights record under review

Canada’s human rights record is under review on Friday 26 April at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva as part to the Universal Periodic Review of the performance of every UN Member State.  At a press conference in the Charles Lynch Theatre, Centre Block, House of Commons on Tuesday 23 April at 10:30 a.m. leading human rights advocates will outline the issues that the Council must address in the review of Canada.

These concerns include the human rights situation facing Indigenous Peoples, failure to sign on to key international treaties, a growing record of unimplemented UN recommendations, the rising inequality of women and troubling trends in sexual violence, punitive measures that have restricted advocacy and dissent in Canada, arbitrary detention and forced return of migrants, issues about torture, excessive methods of policing during protests, and strategies to address homelessness and poverty.
