Food Bank Volunteers Brown Bag their Demands
What: On October 17, food bank volunteers – everyone from fiery students to retired church ladies – will walk away from their lunch lines to serve up food for thought on street corners in Ottawa, Toronto and across the country. Instead of handing out free lunch, volunteers are handing out lunch bags marked “Chew on This!” which will contain an apple and a postcard about hunger in Canada that can be sent to Prime Minister Harper. They want him to take a proactive approach to eradicating poverty and hunger for the 882,000 people who resort to food banks each month and the millions of others struggling to get by.
Who: Food bank volunteers and staff, emergency food program volunteers and staff, social justice advocates and MPs.
When: October 17, 2013 (the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty) from noon – 1 p.m.
Where: The corner of Wellington Street and Metcalfe Street in Ottawa (across from Parliament Hill); the corner of King Street and Bay Street in Toronto; other sites in Victoria, Vancouver, Richmond, Whitehorse, Calgary, Regina, Windsor, Hamilton, Newmarket and Halifax.
Dignity for All: the campaign for a poverty-free Canada, headed by Canada Without Poverty and Citizens for Public Justice, is a multi-year, non-partisan campaign supported by over 10,000 individuals and 600 local and national organizations calling for a comprehensive federal plan to eliminate poverty.
