If we truly want to eradicate poverty in Canada, we need to go beyond band-aid solutions. October 17 is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This year, you can be part of calling for real solutions by participating in a Chew on This! demonstration in your city or town.
On October 17, 2014, Volunteers will take to the streets in over 20 towns and cities across Canada to distribute 15,000 lunch bags with the words “Chew on This!” printed on the outside. The bags will include an apple, information on hunger in Canada, and a postcard that can be sent to the Prime Minister, calling for a National Poverty Action Plan.
Who is involved, you ask? Frontline food-bank volunteers (including retirees, students, and church members), regional anti-poverty coalitions, and the two national organizations behind Dignity for All: the campaign for a poverty-free Canada, Canada Without Poverty and Citizens for Public Justice. Dignity for All is a coalition of organizations from multiple sectors in society including health, education, faith-based, and social justice groups.
We’re looking for regional organizers from across Canada to arrange Chew On This! activities in their communities.
Want to be involved? E-mail Janelle[at]cpj.ca for more information and to be put on the mailing list for organizers.
